What is Black Fashion Legacy?
Black Fashion Legacy is a comprehensive collection of educational resources preserving and celebrating Black fashion history and its cultural impact. We develop curriculum materials, lesson plans, workshops, and educational resources that ensure Black fashion history is integrated into educational spaces and celebrated in our communities. Black Fashion Legacy is an initiative of Hems & Brims, a nonprofit organization empowering Black creatives in the fashion industry.
-
How is Black Fashion Legacy connected to Hems & Brims?
Black Fashion Legacy is an initiative of Hems & Brims, founded by Briana Burton after recognizing that Black fashion creatives were consistently underrepresented in educational materials and curricula. Every resource we create and partnership we build directly supports Hems & Brims' programming, which empowers Black creatives through mentorship, resources, and professional development opportunities. When you support Black Fashion Legacy, you're investing in both preservation and the next generation of Black talent in fashion.

How do you research and verify the information?

As we grow, we're building relationships with historians, researchers, and cultural institutions to ensure accuracy and depth. We prioritize telling these stories with the care, context, and respect they deserve while making them accessible for educational use.
